Common Use

Azelex contains the active ingredient azelaic acid, which belongs to a class of topical medications used to treat certain skin conditions—in simple terms, it works by unclogging pores, reducing inflammation, and killing the bacteria that contribute to acne. It also helps fade dark spots left behind by acne and improves overall skin texture.

Azelex is used to treat:

Mild to moderate acne – a common skin condition where hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and sometimes deeper lumps

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – dark spots that remain on the skin after acne lesions heal

Dosage and Direction

Apply Azelex twice daily, in the morning and evening, or as directed by your dermatologist.

How to apply:

Clean and dry the affected skin thoroughly

Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected areas

Gently rub it in until it is evenly distributed

Avoid applying to broken, irritated, or sunburned skin

Keep the cream away from the eyes, mouth, and inside of the nose

Use the medication consistently for several weeks to see noticeable improvement. It may take 4 to 8 weeks before you see the full benefits.

Precautions

Before using Azelex, inform your doctor if you have:

Asthma

Sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions to skincare products

Important:

Azelex is for external use only. Do not apply it to large areas of skin unless prescribed by your doctor

Avoid excessive sun exposure while using this medication, as it may make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily

Contraindications

Missed Dose

Maintaining a consistent routine helps the medication work more effectively. Missing occasional doses will not significantly affect long-term results.

Overdose

Topical overdose is unlikely, but excessive application can lead to:

Redness

Burning

If you accidentally apply too much, wash the area with water and pat dry. If you accidentally ingest the cream, seek immediate medical attention.

Use only as prescribed and do not apply more frequently than directed. Always wash your hands after applying to prevent unintentional contact with sensitive areas such as the eyes.

Storage

Store Azelex cream at room temperature between 15–25°C (59–77°F) , away from:

Direct sunlight

Keep the cap tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze. Store out of reach of children and pets.
