Antivert is used to treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness.
Common Use
Antivert contains the active ingredient meclizine, which belongs to a class of medications called antihistamines—in simple terms, it works by blocking certain chemical messengers in the brain that are responsible for triggering nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.
Antivert is used to treat:
Motion sickness – the nausea, vomiting, and dizziness that can occur when traveling by car, boat, plane, or other forms of transport
Vertigo – a sensation of spinning or dizziness, often associated with inner ear problems such as labyrinthitis or Ménière’s disease
By blocking the signals that cause these symptoms, Antivert helps reduce or prevent the uncomfortable feelings of nausea and dizziness, making travel and daily activities more manageable for those who suffer from these conditions.
Dosage and Direction
Consult with your doctor before using Antivert, and use no more than the prescribed amount. It is taken orally (by mouth) with or without food.
The recommended dose for adults and children 12 years and over varies depending on the condition:
1. For Motion Sickness:
The usual dose is 5 to 50 mg, taken 1 hour before traveling
During your journey, the dose may be repeated every 24 hours if needed
2. For Vertigo:
The usual dose is 25 to 100 mg per day, divided into equal, smaller doses as determined by your doctor
For children under 12 years of age, this medication is generally not recommended unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.
Note: This information is provided for general guidance. It is very important to consult with your doctor before using this medication to ensure you get the best results for your specific situation.
Precautions
Use Antivert with caution if you have a medical history that includes:
Asthma
Glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
An enlarged prostate gland (benign prostatic hyperplasia)
Antivert may cause drowsiness or reduced alertness. Therefore, avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, or doing any activity that requires full attention until you know how the medication affects you.
Use with caution in hot weather and during exercise, as antihistamines can affect your body’s ability to regulate temperature.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Antivert should not be used during pregnancy or if you are planning to become pregnant without your doctor’s advice
Because of possible adverse effects on the infant, breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding
Contraindications
Antivert is contraindicated—meaning you should not take it—in the following situations:
Hypersensitivity (allergy) to meclizine or any of the other ingredients in the medication
Pregnancy (unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise)
Possible Side Effects
Serious allergic reactions (rare) may include:
Hives
Difficulty breathing
Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
If you experience any of these, stop using Antivert and seek immediate medical attention.
Less serious side effects may include:
Blurred vision
Dry mouth
Constipation
Dizziness
Drowsiness
If you experience any of these side effects, or if they become bothersome or persistent, stop using Antivert and tell your doctor as soon as possible. Also consult with your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or concerning.
Drug Interactions
Antivert can interact with several other substances and medications:
Alcohol – can increase drowsiness and dizziness
Other antihistamines – such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), which can have additive effects
Sedatives and sleeping pills – can increase drowsiness
It is important to note that interaction between two medications does not always mean you must stop taking one of them. Often, your doctor can manage the interaction by adjusting doses or timing. Always consult your doctor about how any potential interactions should be managed.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take your dose, take it as soon as you remember—unless it is almost time for your next dose. If that’s the case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take double or extra doses to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
Symptoms of Antivert overdose may include:
Unusual excitability
Drowsiness (severe)
Hallucinations
Very slow or shallow breathing
Seizures
If you experience any of these symptoms or any unusual symptoms after taking too much, call your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention.
Storage
Store Antivert at room temperature between 20–25°C (68–77°F). Keep it away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Storage in the bathroom is not recommended, as humidity can affect the medication. Keep it out of reach of children.
