Aciphex (Rabeprazole)

Aciphex reduces amount of acid in the stomach and relieves symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Common use

Aciphex belongs to a family of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) — in simple terms, it turns down the switch in your stomach that produces acid. It works by blocking an enzyme system called (H+,K+)-ATPase, which is the final step in making stomach acid. Think of it as shutting off the tap at the source.

It’s used to treat:

Ulcers in the stomach — painful sores that can develop when acid damages the stomach lining

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome — a rare condition where tumors cause the stomach to produce too much acid

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — what many of us call kafsi (heartburn) when acid from the stomach comes back up into the food pipe

To help eradicate Helicobacter pylori — a bacteria that can cause ulcers and chronic gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) — usually in combination with antibiotics

After you take Aciphex, the acid-blocking effect starts within an hour and reaches its peak in 2 to 4 hours. So if you’ve been suffering with that burning feeling after a heavy souvla or a late-night meze, this one gets to work fairly quickly.

Dosage and directions

Your doctor will give you the right dose depending on what you’re being treated for. Usually, for an acute duodenal ulcer, the recommendation is one 20 mg tablet in the morning, once a day, for 4 to 6 weeks. For treating H. pylori infection, you might only need Aciphex for a week — but it’s always combined with antibiotics.

Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully — don’t take more than prescribed. Swallow the tablets whole, with a big glass of water. Don’t crush, split, or chew them. You can take them with or without food — food doesn’t affect how well it’s absorbed, so whatever suits your routine.

Precautions

Tell your doctor before you start if you have severe liver disease or if there’s any suspicion of stomach cancer — sometimes these symptoms can mask more serious conditions.

Use in children is not recommended. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, let your doctor know — while it’s not expected to harm an unborn baby, it’s always better to have the conversation.

Some conditions are treated with a combination of Aciphex and antibiotics — to get the full benefit, take all your medications exactly as directed. Don’t skip the antibiotics just because you start feeling better.

Contraindications

Do not take Aciphex if you:

Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Have a hypersensitivity (allergy) to Aciphex or any other proton pump inhibitor — these include omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), pantoprazole (Protonix), and esomeprazole (Nexium)

If you’ve had a bad reaction to any of these in the past, this one’s not for you.

Possible side effects

If you experience signs of an allergic reaction — like hives, rash, or swelling of the tongue and face — stop taking it and get medical help.

Other side effects that may occur:

Headache

Dizziness

Dry mouth

Upset stomach or diarrhoea

Constipation

Insomnia (trouble sleeping)

Nervousness

Rash or itching

If any of these are severe or don’t go away, let your doctor know.

Drug interaction

Aciphex affects how your stomach absorbs other medications because it changes the acidity in your stomach. This can cause interactions with drugs whose absorption depends on stomach acid.

Two important examples:

Ketoconazole (Nizoral) — Aciphex can reduce how much of it gets absorbed, making it less effective

Digoxin (Lanoxin) — Aciphex can increase the amount absorbed, raising the risk of toxicity

Always tell your doctor about all the medications you’re taking so they can keep an eye on things.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and go back to your regular schedule. Never double up — it won’t give you extra benefit and could cause problems.

Overdose

Symptoms of Aciphex overdose aren’t well known — but if you think you’ve taken too much, seek emergency medical attention. Better to be safe than sorry.

Storage

Store at room temperature — between 15°C and 25°C — away from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. In the Cypriot summer, don’t leave it in a hot car or on a sunny windowsill.
