Azopt (Brinzolamide ophthalmic)

Azopt is an eye-drop medication used to lower intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension by reducing the production of fluid in the eye.

Common Use

Azopt contains the active ingredient brinzolamide, which belongs to a class of medications called carbonic anhydrase inhibitors—in simple terms, it works by reducing the production of fluid (called aqueous humor) inside the eye. When too much fluid builds up, it increases pressure inside the eye, which can damage the optic nerve (the nerve that sends visual information from the eye to the brain) and lead to vision loss.

Azopt is used to treat:

Open-angle glaucoma – the most common form of glaucoma, where the drainage channels in the eye become less efficient over time, causing a gradual increase in eye pressure

Ocular hypertension – a condition where the pressure inside the eye is higher than normal, but there is no detectable damage to the optic nerve yet. Treating ocular hypertension can help prevent the development of glaucoma

By lowering intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye), Azopt helps protect the optic nerve and reduce the risk of vision loss.

Dosage and Direction

Azopt is usually applied as one drop in the affected eye(s) two to three times daily, or as directed by your eye doctor.

How to apply:

Wash your hands thoroughly before use

Tilt your head back and look up

Gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket (conjunctival sac)

Instill one drop into the pocket without touching the dropper tip to your eye, eyelid, or any other surface

Close your eye gently for 1–2 minutes. Press lightly on the inner corner of the eye (near the nose) to help the drop stay in the eye and reduce the chance of a bitter taste in the mouth

If you use more than one type of eye drop, wait at least 5–10 minutes between applying different drops

Precautions

Before using Azopt, inform your doctor if you have:

Kidney disease – brinzolamide is eliminated through the kidneys

Liver problems

A history of eye infections

Allergy to sulfonamides – brinzolamide is a sulfonamide derivative; if you have a known allergy to sulfa drugs, let your doctor know

Contact lenses:

Avoid wearing contact lenses while applying Azopt unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise. The eye drops contain a preservative that can be absorbed by soft contact lenses. If you wear contacts, remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them

Contraindications

Azopt is contraindicated—meaning you should not use it—if you are:

Allergic to brinzolamide, sulfonamides, or any component of the eye drops

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects (usually mild and temporary) may include:

Temporary blurred vision after applying the drop

Burning or stinging sensation in the eye

Bitter taste in the mouth (this can happen if the drop drains into the throat through the tear duct; pressing on the inner corner of the eye after application helps reduce this)

Mild eye discomfort or foreign body sensation

Rare but serious side effects (seek medical attention immediately) may include:

Eye swelling or severe redness

Signs of allergic reaction – rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing

Severe eye pain or vision changes

If you experience any severe symptoms, contact your eye doctor or seek emergency medical attention.

Drug Interactions

Azopt may interact with other medications:

Other carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (such as acetazolamide, methazolamide) – using them together may increase the risk of side effects

Medications affecting kidney function – as brinzolamide is eliminated by the kidneys, other drugs that affect kidney function may alter its levels

Inform your doctor about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and supplements you are taking.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember—unless it is almost time for your next dose. If that’s the case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Overdose from eye drops is unlikely, but if you apply too much, you may experience:

Eye irritation

If a large amount is swallowed (especially by a child), systemic effects such as nausea, dizziness, or drowsiness may occur

If overdose is suspected (or if the medication is accidentally swallowed), seek medical attention immediately.

Storage

Store Azopt at room temperature, away from heat and light

Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use

Avoid freezing

Keep out of reach of children and pets
