Actoplus Met combines Metformin and Pioglitazone to control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients. It works by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing glucose production. The medication should be taken with food to reduce stomach upset. Regular monitoring and proper storage are important for safe and effective use.
Common use
Actoplus Met is a medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes — the kind where your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use it properly. In Cyprus, where we love our glyka (sweets) and koulourakia, keeping blood sugar in check is something many of us have to think about.
This medication combines two active ingredients:
Pioglitazone — which helps your body respond better to insulin (what we call improving insulin sensitivity)
Metformin — which reduces the amount of glucose your liver produces
Together, they work like a team to help keep your zakharo (sugar) at a healthier level.
Dosage and direction
Take Actoplus Met by mouth, usually once or twice a day, with meals — this helps reduce stomach upset. The dose is adjusted based on your blood sugar levels and your medical history, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Don’t take more or less than prescribed, and don’t stop without having a word with your doctor first.
Precautions
Before starting this medication, let your doctor know if you have:
Heart disease
Kidney problems — this is important because the metformin part is cleared through the kidneys
Liver problems
Avoid excessive alcohol while taking Actoplus Met. A glass of wine with dinner is one thing, but heavy drinking — especially with metformin on board — increases the risk of a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis (a build-up of lactic acid in the blood). It’s not worth the risk.
Contraindications
Do not take Actoplus Met if you have:
Severe kidney disease
Metabolic acidosis — a condition where your blood becomes too acidic
Type 1 diabetes (this medication is for type 2 only)
Diabetic ketoacidosis — a serious complication of diabetes where your body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones
If any of these apply to you, this medication is not the right fit.
Possible side effects
Common side effects include:
Nausea
Diarrhoea
Headache
These are usually mild and often settle down as your body gets used to the medication.
Rarer but more serious risks include heart failure (especially in people with existing heart problems) and lactic acidosis. Signs of lactic acidosis include unusual muscle pain, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, severe weakness, and feeling cold or dizzy. If you notice any of these, seek medical help straight away.
Drug interaction
Actoplus Met can interact with several other medications:
Insulin — taking them together may increase the risk of low blood sugar (chamili zakharo)
Diuretics (water pills)
Corticosteroids (like prednisone)
Other antidiabetic medications
Always give your doctor a full list of everything you’re taking — prescriptions, over-the-counter meds, and even herbal supplements. A complete picture helps avoid surprises.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it with food as soon as you remember. But if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one — never double up. Taking two doses at once can increase the risk of side effects without giving you any extra benefit.
Overdose
If you think you’ve taken too much, seek emergency help right away. Symptoms of overdose can include:
Weakness
Muscle pain
Difficulty breathing
Signs of severe lactic acidosis
Don’t wait around if you’re worried.
Storage
Store Actoplus Met at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep it in its original container, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. In the Cypriot summer, don’t leave it in a hot car or on a sunny windowsill.
