Aromasin (Exemestane) is an aromatase inhibitor used to treat hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women by reducing estrogen levels in the body.
Common Use
Aromasin contains the active ingredient exemestane, which belongs to a class of medications called aromatase inhibitors—in simple terms, it works by blocking an enzyme called aromatase, which is responsible for producing estrogen in the body after menopause. Many types of breast cancer are hormone receptor-positive, meaning they depend on estrogen to grow and spread. By lowering estrogen levels, Aromasin helps slow or stop the growth of certain breast tumors.
Aromasin is used primarily to treat:
Early-stage hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women—often after 2–3 years of tamoxifen therapy (sequential treatment)
Advanced (metastatic) breast cancer in postmenopausal women—when other hormone therapies (such as tamoxifen) have stopped working
As a first-line treatment for advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women
Aromasin is specifically for postmenopausal women and is not effective in women who still have regular menstrual periods.
Dosage and Direction
The usual recommended dose is 25 mg (one tablet) once daily, taken after a meal—taking it with food helps with absorption and may reduce stomach upset. It is best to take it at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels in your body.
Follow your doctor’s prescription carefully and do not change the dose without consulting your healthcare provider. Treatment may continue for several years, depending on your condition.
Precautions
Before taking Aromasin, inform your doctor if you have:
Liver disease – the medication is processed by the liver
Kidney disease – dose adjustments may be needed
Osteoporosis or low bone mineral density – because Aromasin lowers estrogen, it can accelerate bone thinning
High cholesterol – Aromasin may affect cholesterol levels
Pregnancy and birth control:
Aromasin is for postmenopausal women only. However, if you are still of childbearing potential, use effective birth control during treatment, as the drug may cause harm to an unborn baby
Do not use Aromasin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Driving and operating machinery:
Avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness, fatigue, or drowsiness while taking this medication
Contraindications
Aromasin should not be used in the following situations:
Premenopausal women – it is not effective and may not be safe
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Known hypersensitivity (allergy) to exemestane or any of its components
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
Hot flashes – sudden feelings of warmth, often in the face and chest
Headache
Fatigue (tiredness)
Nausea
Increased sweating
Joint or muscle pain (arthralgia)
Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
Mood changes
Less common but more serious side effects may include:
Bone loss (osteoporosis) – leading to an increased risk of fractures
Depression – mood changes that may be severe
Liver function changes – symptoms may include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or severe abdominal pain
Severe allergic reactions – rash, swelling, difficulty breathing
Carpal tunnel syndrome – numbness or tingling in the hands and fingers
If you experience any severe or persistent symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
Drug Interactions
Aromasin may interact with several medications. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking, including over-the-counter products and herbal remedies.
Important interactions:
Estrogen-containing medications – such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or estrogen-based contraceptives, which can reduce or neutralize the effects of Aromasin
Drugs that affect liver enzymes – such as:
Rifampicin (an antibiotic)
Phenytoin or carbamazepine (seizure medications)
St. John’s wort (an herbal supplement) – these may decrease the effectiveness of Aromasin
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember—unless it is almost time for your next dose. If that’s the case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include:
Severe dizziness
Vomiting
Loss of consciousness
There is no specific antidote for Aromasin overdose; treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
Storage
Store Aromasin at room temperature between 15–30°C (59–86°F), away from moisture and heat. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
