Armotraz (Anastrozole)

Armotraz is an anti-cancer medication containing anastrozole, an aromatase inhibitor. It is used to treat hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women by lowering estrogen levels in the body. The drug is effective in both early-stage and advanced breast cancer treatment.

Common Use

Armotraz contains the active ingredient anastrozole, which belongs to a class of medications called aromatase inhibitors—in simple terms, it works by blocking an enzyme called aromatase, which is responsible for producing estrogen in the body after menopause. Many types of breast cancer are hormone receptor-positive, meaning they depend on estrogen to grow and spread. By reducing estrogen levels, Armotraz helps slow or stop the growth of certain breast cancer cells.

Armotraz is used primarily to treat:

Early-stage hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women—often after surgery (adjuvant therapy) to help prevent the cancer from returning

Advanced (metastatic) breast cancer in postmenopausal women—to help control the disease and slow its progression

Dosage and Direction

The typical dosage is 1 mg (one tablet), taken orally once a day. It is recommended to take Armotraz at the same time each day to help maintain consistent levels in your body. You may take it with or without food—whatever suits you best.

Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully. Do not change the dose or stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor first.

Precautions

Armotraz should be used with caution in individuals with:

A history of bone problems or osteoporosis – because lowering estrogen levels can lead to bone thinning (loss of bone density)

High cholesterol – anastrozole may affect cholesterol levels

Liver disease – the medication is processed by the liver

Regular monitoring by your doctor is recommended to ensure proper management of side effects and treatment efficacy. This may include:

Bone density scans (DEXA scans) to monitor bone health

Blood tests to check cholesterol and liver function

Regular follow-up appointments to assess how well the treatment is working

Contraindications

Armotraz should not be used in the following situations:

Premenopausal women – this medication is specifically for postmenopausal women; it is not effective in women who still have regular menstrual periods

Known hypersensitivity (allergy) to anastrozole or any other components of the medication

Pregnancy or breastfeeding – Armotraz can cause harm to a developing baby and should not be used during pregnancy or while nursing

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

Hot flashes – sudden feelings of warmth, often in the face and chest

Joint pain or stiffness

Weakness or fatigue

Nausea

Headaches

Skin rashes

Less common but more serious side effects may include:

Bone thinning (osteoporosis) – leading to an increased risk of fractures

Changes in cholesterol levels

Liver abnormalities – symptoms may include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or severe abdominal pain

Severe allergic reactions – rash, swelling, difficulty breathing

If you experience any of the more serious side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Drug Interactions

Armotraz may interact with other medications. Always inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements.

Important interactions:

Tamoxifen – should not be taken with Armotraz, as they may interfere with each other’s effectiveness

Estrogen-containing medications – such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or estrogen-based contraceptives, which can neutralize the effects of Armotraz

Medications metabolized by liver enzymes – anastrozole may affect how these drugs are processed

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember—unless it is almost time for your next dose. If that’s the case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms may include:

Severe nausea

Vomiting

Dizziness

If an overdose is suspected, seek medical attention immediately.

Storage

Store Armotraz at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.
