Arimidex (Anastrozole)

Common Use

Arimidex contains the active ingredient anastrozole. It belongs to a class of medications called aromatase inhibitors—in simple terms, it works by blocking an enzyme called aromatase, which is responsible for producing estrogen in the body after menopause. By inhibiting this enzyme, Arimidex significantly lowers estrogen levels in postmenopausal women.

Many types of breast cancer are hormone receptor-positive, meaning they depend on estrogen to grow and spread. By reducing the amount of estrogen available, Arimidex helps slow or stop the growth of certain breast cancer tumors.

Arimidex is used to treat:

Early-stage hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women—often after surgery (adjuvant therapy) to help prevent the cancer from returning

Advanced (metastatic) breast cancer in postmenopausal women—to help control the disease and slow its progression

It may also be used for other estrogen-sensitive conditions as determined by a doctor

Dosage and Direction

Take Arimidex exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The usual dose is one tablet (1 mg) once daily. Follow your dosing schedule carefully and do not take more of this medication than prescribed.

Treatment with Arimidex may continue for up to five years, depending on your condition and your doctor’s recommendations. Consistency is important—taking it at the same time each day helps maintain steady levels in your body.

Precautions

Before starting Arimidex, inform your doctor if you:

Are pregnant or breastfeeding (Arimidex is only for postmenopausal women)

Have severe liver disease

Have a history of stroke, blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism)

Have heart disease or circulation problems

Have not yet completed menopause (Arimidex is only for postmenopausal women)

If you have any of these conditions, your dose may need to be adjusted, or your doctor may need to monitor you more closely during treatment.

Important:

Arimidex may impair your ability to concentrate, think clearly, or react quickly. Be especially careful while driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you

Arimidex can cause bone thinning (osteoporosis) because estrogen helps protect bone density. Your doctor may recommend calcium and vitamin D supplements and may monitor your bone density with regular scans

Contraindications

Arimidex should not be used in the following situations:

Premenopausal women (women who still have regular menstrual periods)

Pregnant or breastfeeding women

Severe kidney disorders

Moderate to severe liver disease

Hypersensitivity (allergy) to anastrozole or any other components of the drug

Important interaction: Estrogen-containing preparations (such as hormone replacement therapy or estrogen-based contraceptives) should not be taken with Arimidex, as they can neutralize its pharmacological effect and make the treatment less effective.

Possible Side Effects

More serious side effects (require immediate medical attention) may include:

Signs of allergic reaction: hives, skin rash, facial swelling, difficulty breathing

Sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance

Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body (signs of stroke)

Bone fractures

Swollen glands (lymph nodes)

Swelling in the hands or feet (edema)

Common side effects (less serious) may include:

Hot flashes (sudden warmth in the face and chest)

Sore throat

Weakness or fatigue

Back pain, bone pain, or joint pain

Nausea

Headache

If you experience any of the more serious side effects, seek medical attention immediately.

Drug Interactions

Arimidex can interact with other medications. Inform your doctor if you are taking:

Tamoxifen – taking these two medications together is not recommended, as they may interfere with each other’s effectiveness

Estrogen-containing medications – as mentioned above, these neutralize the effects of Arimidex

Also inform your doctor about all prescribed and over-the-counter medications, herbal products, vitamins, and food supplements you are using. This helps ensure that Arimidex works as effectively and safely as possible.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember—unless it is almost time for your next dose. If that’s the case, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Never double dose this medication to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

There is limited information about Arimidex overdose. If you suspect that you have taken too much of this medication, contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention.

Storage

Store Arimidex at room temperature between 20–25°C (68–77°F). Keep it away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Do not store it in the bathroom, and keep it out of reach of children.
