Azor is a combination medication containing olmesartan and amlodipine, used to treat high blood pressure. It works by relaxing blood vessels, helping improve blood flow and lower blood pressure.
Common Use
Azor is a combination medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults. It contains two active ingredients that work together to lower blood pressure:
Olmesartan – belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) . In simple terms, it works by blocking a hormone that causes blood vessels to narrow, helping them relax and widen
Amlodipine – belongs to a class of medications called calcium channel blockers (CCBs) . It also helps relax and widen blood vessels, and it can slow down the heart rate slightly
By combining these two mechanisms, Azor provides enhanced blood pressure control compared to using either medication alone. It is usually prescribed when single-drug therapy is not sufficient to keep blood pressure within a healthy range.
Lowering blood pressure with Azor helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as:
Stroke – damage to the brain caused by interrupted blood flow
Heart attack (myocardial infarction) – damage to the heart muscle due to reduced blood flow
Other complications related to high blood pressure, such as kidney damage
Dosage and Direction
Azor should be taken exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. It is typically taken once daily, with or without food—whatever suits you best.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet
Try to take it at the same time each day to help maintain consistent levels in your body
Your doctor may adjust your dose based on your blood pressure response
Precautions
Before taking Azor, inform your doctor if you have:
Kidney disease – both olmesartan and amlodipine are processed by the kidneys
Liver problems – amlodipine is processed by the liver; severe liver impairment may require a lower dose or special caution
Heart conditions – such as heart failure, angina (chest pain), or a history of heart attack
Diabetes
Low blood pressure (hypotension)
Important:
Azor may cause dizziness, especially when you first start treatment or when your dose is increased. This is usually temporary. Get up slowly from sitting or lying positions to reduce the risk of falls
Avoid excessive alcohol consumption – alcohol can increase the blood-pressure-lowering effect and may make dizziness worse
Regular blood pressure monitoring is recommended to ensure the medication is working effectively and to help your doctor adjust the dose if needed
Pregnancy warning: Azor can cause serious harm to an unborn baby and should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant while taking Azor, stop the medication immediately and contact your doctor. Women of childbearing age should use effective birth control.
Breastfeeding: It is not known whether the components of Azor pass into breast milk. Discuss breastfeeding with your doctor before using this medication.
Contraindications
Azor is contraindicated—meaning you should not take it—in the following situations:
Known hypersensitivity (allergy) to olmesartan, amlodipine, or any of its components
Pregnancy – especially during the second and third trimesters
Severe liver impairment – may require special caution or avoidance (amlodipine is not recommended in severe liver disease)
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects (usually mild to moderate) may include:
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Headache
Swelling of the ankles or feet (edema) – this is a common side effect of amlodipine
Flushing (redness and warmth of the face, neck, or chest)
Fatigue (tiredness)
Less common but more serious side effects (seek medical attention) may include:
Severe low blood pressure – causing fainting or severe dizziness
Signs of allergic reaction – rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing
High potassium levels (hyperkalemia) – symptoms may include muscle weakness, slow or irregular heartbeat
Kidney problems – changes in urination, swelling
If you experience any severe reactions, contact your doctor immediately.
Drug Interactions
Azor may interact with several medications. Always inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements.
Important interactions:
Other blood pressure medications – taking them together may increase the blood-pressure-lowering effect and cause dizziness
Potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics (such as spironolactone) – may increase potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia)
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or celecoxib—may reduce the effectiveness of Azor and increase the risk of kidney problems
Lithium – may increase lithium levels; monitoring is recommended
Simvastatin – amlodipine can increase simvastatin levels; the dose of simvastatin should not exceed 20 mg per day when taken with amlodipine
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember—unless it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose. If that’s the case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include:
Severe low blood pressure (hypotension)
Severe dizziness or fainting
Slow or fast heartbeat
If an overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage.
Storage
Store Azor at room temperature, away from moisture and heat
Keep the medication in its original packaging to protect it from direct sunlight
Keep out of reach of children
