Advair Diskus contains (30 doses)a corticosteroid and a beta2-receptor agonist. It relaxes symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Common Use
Advair Diskus is used to manage two main conditions: asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) —specifically when COPD is associated with chronic bronchitis. It comes as an oral inhaler and contains two active ingredients that work together.
The first ingredient, fluticasone propionate, is a corticosteroid. In plain terms, this is an anti-inflammatory medicine that helps reduce swelling and irritation in the airways of the lungs. The second ingredient, salmeterol, belongs to a class called long-acting beta2-agonists (LABA). It works by relaxing the smooth muscles surrounding the bronchi (the air passages), causing them to widen and stay open for a prolonged period. Together, these two ingredients help prevent wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, making it easier to breathe on a day-to-day basis.
Dosage and Direction
Advair Diskus should be used twice daily—once in the morning and once in the evening, with about 12 hours between doses. Do not use it more often than prescribed, as excessive use can aggravate heart irregularities. If you have any kind of heart disorder or high blood pressure, caution is needed, so make sure your doctor is aware of your condition.
Precautions
Stopping Advair Diskus suddenly is not recommended, as it can cause a worsening of your asthma or other breathing problems such as emphysema or bronchitis. This medication is not designed to stop a sudden asthma attack or an acute episode of breathing difficulty—it is a maintenance treatment meant to prevent symptoms over time.
Do not take this medication if your asthma is well controlled with another drug, or if you only need a short-acting inhaler occasionally. Before starting Advair, inform your doctor if:
You are taking ritonavir (an anti-HIV medication)
You have a history of allergies
You have diabetes, heart disorders, high blood pressure, or problems with your immune system
You have liver or kidney failure
You are pregnant or breastfeeding
You suffer from a thyroid disorder, seizures, or osteoporosis
You have been exposed to chickenpox or measles
Contraindications
Advair Diskus cannot be used for the primary treatment of status asthmaticus (a severe, life-threatening asthma attack that does not respond to standard treatment) or for acute episodes of asthma or COPD. It is also contraindicated if you have hypersensitivity (an allergy) to any of its ingredients, and it should not be given to children under 4 years of age.
Possible Side Effects
This medication may slightly increase the risk of pneumonia. If you experience any of the following symptoms, they could be signs of pneumonia, and you should check with your doctor immediately:
Fever or chills
Increased mucus (sputum) production or a change in mucus colour
Increased coughing
Worsening breathing problems
You should also contact your doctor right away if your breathing problems worsen during treatment with Advair Diskus.
Drug Interactions
Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following, as interactions may occur:
Tricyclic antidepressants (such as amitriptyline or imipramine)
MAOI antidepressants (such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine)
Beta blockers used to control blood pressure (such as atenolol or propranolol)
Ketoconazole (an antifungal medication)
Long-acting inhalers (such as formoterol or other salmeterol products)
Ritonavir (an anti-HIV drug)
Diuretics (such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide)
Missed Dose
If you forget to take your dose in time, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is too late or nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double up on doses. To avoid missing a dose, try to take it at about the same time each day.
Overdose
If you experience a severe headache, fast or irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, or tremor, these may be signs of an overdose. Contact your doctor straight away, as you may need immediate medical care.
Storage
Store at room temperature away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets.
