Albenza is used to treat tapeworm infections, it works changing ability of the worm to absorb sugar necessary for its normal life.
Common Use
Albenza is an anti-parasitic medication used to treat various tapeworm infections and other worm infestations. In simple terms, it works by stopping the worms from absorbing sugar (glucose), which is their main source of energy. Without energy, the worms gradually weaken and die, and the body then clears them out.
Albenza is used to treat infections caused by several types of parasites, including:
Taenia solium – the pork tapeworm, which can cause neurocysticercosis (an infection of the brain and nervous system) when the larval form gets into the tissues
Cystic hydatid disease of the liver, peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), or lungs – caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus
Ascariasis – infection with common roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides)
Cutaneous larva migrans – a skin condition caused by hookworm larvae that burrow under the skin, often picked up from walking barefoot on contaminated soil
Pinworms (enterobiasis or oxyuriasis) – common intestinal worms, especially in children, that cause itching around the anus
Hookworms (ancylostomiasis and necatoriasis) – intestinal parasites that attach to the gut wall and feed on blood
Whipworms (trichuriasis) – intestinal worms that can cause diarrhoea and abdominal discomfort
Strongyloidiasis – infection with Strongyloides stercoralis, a tiny roundworm that can penetrate the skin and travel through the body
Trichostrongyliasis – a less common intestinal worm infection, usually acquired from grazing animals
Dosage and Direction
Take Albenza twice daily with meals—food helps the body absorb the medication properly. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Swallow the tablets whole with a small amount of liquid; do not crush or chew them. The length of treatment varies depending on the type of infection, so it’s important to complete the full course as prescribed.
Precautions
Do not give this medication to anyone else who has similar symptoms, unless it has been prescribed for them. Before taking Albenza, let your doctor know if you:
Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
Have eye problems, particularly retinal lesions (damage to the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye)
Have liver failure or other liver problems
Have low white blood cell counts, low platelet counts, or other bone marrow problems
These conditions may affect whether Albenza is suitable for you, or may require closer monitoring during treatment.
Contraindications
Albenza is contraindicated—meaning you should not take it—if you are allergic to any of its components. It is also contraindicated in pregnant patients, especially during the first trimester, unless your doctor decides the benefit clearly outweighs the risk. Caution is needed in patients with hepatic impairment (liver problems), as the medication is processed by the liver.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects can vary, but common ones include:
Abdominal pain
Dizziness
Headache
Fever
Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea
Temporary hair loss
More serious side effects may include allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, fever, sore throat, or severe tiredness and weakness (which could indicate low blood cell counts). If you experience any of these, notify your doctor straight away.
Drug Interactions
Albenza may interact with other medications. Let your doctor know about all prescription and over-the-counter medications you use, as well as any herbal products. In particular, mention if you are taking:
Dexamethasone (a steroid)
Praziquantel (another anti-parasitic medication)
Cimetidine (used for stomach acid)
Theophylline (used for asthma or breathing conditions)
These can affect the level of Albenza in your blood and may require adjustments to your treatment.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember—unless it is almost time for your next dose. If that’s the case, simply skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects.
Overdose
If you suspect that you have taken too much of this medication, seek immediate medical attention. Overdose may cause increased side effects such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or dizziness.
Storage
Store Albenza at room temperature, between 20–25°C (68–77°F), away from light. Keep it out of reach of children.
