Albendazole

Albendazole is a powerful antiparasitic drug used to treat a variety of worm infections, including tapeworms and roundworms. It works by killing the parasites and is often taken with food to improve absorption. Common side effects include stomach pain and headache, while serious effects are rare but possible. Medical monitoring is recommended during prolonged use.

Common Use

Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic—in plain language, it’s a medication that kills a wide range of parasitic worms that can live inside the human body. It is used to treat several types of worm infections, including:

Neurocysticercosis – an infection of the brain and nervous system caused by the larval stage of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium). This is a serious condition that can cause seizures and other neurological symptoms.

Echinococcosis (also known as hydatid disease) – a condition caused by tapeworms from the Echinococcus species, which can form cysts in the liver, lungs, and other organs.

Ascariasis – infection with Ascaris lumbricoides, a large roundworm that lives in the intestines.

Hookworm – intestinal parasites that attach to the lining of the small intestine and feed on blood.

Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) – a common intestinal worm, especially in children, that causes itching around the anus.

Strongyloidiasis – infection with Strongyloides stercoralis, a tiny roundworm that can penetrate the skin and travel through the body.

In simple terms, albendazole works by stopping the worms from absorbing glucose (sugar), which they need to survive. Without energy, the worms cannot move, reproduce, or maintain themselves, and they eventually die. The medication is effective against both intestinal parasites (worms that live in the gut) and tissue parasites (worms that invade other parts of the body).

Dosage and Direction

Albendazole is taken by mouth, and it’s best taken with food—particularly a meal that contains some fat (like olive oil, cheese, or yoghurt), as this helps the body absorb the medication more effectively. The dosage and length of treatment depend on the specific type of infection and the patient’s weight. For some infections, a single dose is enough; for others—especially more serious conditions like neurocysticercosis or hydatid disease—treatment may continue for several days or even weeks.

Precautions

Before starting albendazole, let your doctor know if you have liver disease, bone marrow suppression (a condition where the bone marrow doesn’t produce enough blood cells), or a history of seizures. If you are on long-term treatment, your doctor may need to monitor your liver function and blood counts regularly to make sure everything is staying on track. Albendazole should be used with caution during pregnancy—especially in the first trimester—and only if your doctor decides it is clearly necessary.

Contraindications

Do not use albendazole if you are allergic to it or to other benzimidazole drugs (a family of anti-parasitic medications that includes mebendazole). It is contraindicated in pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester, unless the potential benefit to the mother justifies any risk to the baby. If you are breastfeeding, have a chat with your healthcare provider before starting treatment.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects are usually mild and may include:

Headache

Nausea and vomiting

Abdominal (stomach) pain

Dizziness

More serious side effects can occur, though they are less common. These include:

Elevated liver enzymes (a sign of liver stress)

Low white blood cell count (which can make you more vulnerable to infections)

Allergic reactions

If you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), unusual fatigue, or signs of infection such as persistent fever or sore throat, let your doctor know right away.

Drug Interactions

Albendazole may interact with other medications that affect liver enzymes. In particular, drugs such as dexamethasone (a steroid), cimetidine (used for stomach acid), and praziquantel (another anti-parasitic medication) can change the level of albendazole in your blood. To stay safe, always tell your doctor about all medications you are taking—including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, simply skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose.

Overdose

Overdose is rare, but if too much is taken, it may cause symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal discomfort, or dizziness. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical help. Supportive treatment—such as rest and fluids—is usually sufficient.

Storage

Store albendazole tablets at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep the medication in its original container, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Do not use it after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
