Amoxil is an antibiotic from the penicillin group used to treat infections such as pneumonia, gonorrhea caused by E. coli, salmonella, etc.
Common Use
Amoxil is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the aminopenicillin group—in simple terms, it is a type of penicillin that kills a wide variety of bacteria. It works by interfering with the construction of bacterial cell walls. These cell walls are like protective suits that bacteria need to survive; without them, the bacteria cannot grow, multiply, or protect themselves from their environment, and they eventually die.
Amoxil is effective against a range of bacteria that cause common infections, including:
H. influenzae – a bacterium that can cause respiratory infections, ear infections, and sinusitis
N. gonorrhoeae – the bacterium responsible for gonorrhoea, a sexually transmitted infection
E. coli – a common cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and some intestinal infections
Pneumococci – bacteria that cause pneumonia, meningitis, and ear infections
Streptococci – bacteria responsible for strep throat, tonsillitis, and skin infections
Certain strains of Staphylococci – bacteria that can cause skin infections, abscesses, and other conditions
Amoxil is used to treat various bacterial infections, including:
Respiratory tract infections – such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, and tonsillitis
Ear infections (otitis media)
Urinary tract infections
Skin and soft tissue infections
Helicobacter pylori – used in combination therapy to treat stomach ulcers
Important limitations:
Microorganisms that produce an enzyme called penicillinase (which breaks down penicillin) are resistant to Amoxil
Amoxil is not active against mycobacteria, mycoplasmas, rickettsia, fungi, amoeba, plasmodium (which causes malaria), viruses, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or most Proteus species (except P. mirabilis)
Dosage and Direction
Take Amoxil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change the dose or stop early unless your doctor tells you to.
Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you:
Are allergic to cephalosporins (such as Ceclor, Ceftin, Duricef, Keflex)
Have a history of asthma
Have serious liver or kidney impairment
Have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder
Have mononucleosis (glandular fever)
Have had any type of allergic reaction in the past
You may take Amoxil with or without food—whatever suits you best. However:
Chewable tablets should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing
Capsules should be swallowed whole with a glass of water
Precautions
Amoxil may reduce the effectiveness of certain contraception (birth control pills). It is a good idea to use an additional form of contraception, such as condoms, while taking this antibiotic
Continue taking this medication even if you feel better. Bacteria have a certain life cycle, and stopping early may allow the remaining bacteria to multiply and develop resistance to the antibiotic
Do not give this medication to others who have similar symptoms—their illness may be caused by a different type of microorganism that this antibiotic cannot treat
Antibiotics can cause diarrhoea. If you develop severe or persistent diarrhoea, inform your doctor
If you are breastfeeding, Amoxil may pass into breast milk and cause diarrhoea in your baby. Let your doctor know if you are nursing
Warn your doctor if you suffer from asthma
Contraindications
Amoxil is contraindicated—meaning you should not take it—if you have a known allergy to amoxicillin or to any other penicillin antibiotic.
Possible Side Effects
In addition to allergic reactions (such as hives, swelling, or rash), possible side effects of Amoxil may include:
Diarrhoea
Dizziness
Heartburn
Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
Nausea
Itching
Vomiting
Confusion
Abdominal (stomach) pain
Easy bruising
If you experience a severe allergic reaction—such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing—seek immediate medical attention.
Drug Interactions
Amoxil can interact with other medications:
It increases the absorption of digoxin (a heart medication), which may raise the risk of side effects
It increases the toxicity of methotrexate (used for certain cancers and autoimmune conditions)
Aspirin can slow down the excretion of Amoxil by the kidneys, leading to higher levels in the blood
Note: Amoxil is not known to decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills, but as a precaution, additional contraception is still often recommended.
Missed Dose
Never take a double dose of this medication. If you miss a dose and it is almost time for your next dose, simply skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take extra to make up for a missed dose.
Overdose
Symptoms of an Amoxil overdose may include:
Vomiting and nausea
Diarrhoea
Disturbances in water and electrolyte balance (which can affect how your body functions)
If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor or seek medical help.
Storage
Store Amoxil at room temperature between 15–30°C (59–86°F), away from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children.
