Acular (Ketorolac) is an NSAID used as eye drops to reduce pain and inflammation in the eyes, particularly after surgery or in certain eye conditions. It is typically applied up to four times a day, and common side effects include eye irritation and dryness. It is available on the market at a 5 ml bottle.
Common use
Acular is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) — that’s a fancy way of saying it helps with pain and swelling — but instead of taking it by mouth, you use it as an eye drop. It’s used to relieve pain and inflammation in the eyes, particularly:
After eye surgery (like cataract surgery — something many of our pappoudes and yiayiades in Cyprus have done)
In conditions like conjunctivitis — what we often call ros tsouvali or “pink eye”
The active ingredient, Ketorolac, works by blocking the production of certain chemicals in your body that cause inflammation and pain. Think of it as turning down the fire in your eye.
Dosage and direction
Acular is usually applied as 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to four times a day. Your dose and frequency may vary depending on your condition and your doctor’s recommendation.
Before using, wash your hands — this is important. You don’t want to introduce anything nasty into your eye. Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to your eye, your fingers, or any surface — this keeps the bottle clean and prevents contamination.
Precautions
Before using Acular, tell your doctor if you have a history of:
Glaucoma — increased pressure inside the eye
Cataracts — clouding of the eye’s lens
Corneal ulcers — sores on the clear front part of your eye
Ketorolac may cause blurred vision or temporary discomfort after you put the drops in. So don’t drive or do anything that needs sharp eyesight until you’re sure it’s safe. In Cyprus, where the roads can be lively, it’s better to wait a few minutes until your vision clears.
If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the eye drops. Wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in — your eyes need a break.
Contraindications
Do not use Acular if you:
Are allergic to Ketorolac, other NSAIDs, or any of the ingredients in the product
Have an active eye infection — if your eye is infected, this medication may not be suitable
Have a history of severe allergic reactions to NSAIDs
If any of these apply, have a chat with your doctor before using it.
Possible side effects
Common side effects include:
Eye irritation, burning, or stinging when you put the drops in
Dry eyes
Blurred vision (temporary)
Headache
Sensitivity to light — if you find yourself squinting in the Cypriot sun more than usual, that might be why
Rarer but more serious side effects can include eye infections or damage to the cornea (the clear front surface of your eye), especially with prolonged use. If you notice worsening redness, pain, or changes in your vision, let your doctor know right away.
Drug interaction
Acular may interact with other topical eye medications — that is, other drops or ointments you put in your eyes. It can also interact with oral NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or aspirin) and blood thinners (anticoagulants).
Tell your doctor about all the medications you’re using — including prescription, over-the-counter, and any other eye treatments. A full picture helps avoid problems.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember — unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Don’t use extra drops to make up for a missed one. More is not better when it comes to eye drops.
Overdose
An overdose of Acular is unlikely because it’s used locally in the eye. However, if someone accidentally swallows it, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of ingestion may include stomach upset, nausea, or dizziness.
Storage
Store Acular at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children. Don’t use the eye drops if they’re past their expiration date — old drops can lose their effectiveness or become contaminated.
