Afrin (Oxymetazoline)

Common Use

Afrin, whose active ingredient is oxymetazoline, is used for the temporary relief of nasal congestion—that stuffy, blocked-up feeling that makes it hard to breathe through your nose. It is commonly used when congestion is caused by:

Colds (the common cold)

Hay fever (allergic rhinitis, often triggered by pollen, dust, or pet dander)

Sinusitis (inflammation or infection of the sinuses, the air-filled spaces behind your cheekbones and forehead)

Other upper respiratory conditions

In simple terms, Afrin works as a topical decongestant. When you spray it into your nose, it causes the swollen blood vessels inside your nasal passages to narrow—or “shrink”—which opens up the airways and allows you to breathe more easily. It acts locally, meaning it works right where you spray it.

Dosage and Direction

Afrin is usually given as 1 to 2 sprays in each nostril, every 10 to 12 hours. Do not use more than 2 doses in any 24-hour period. Before each use, shake the bottle gently. It’s important not to use Afrin for more than 3 consecutive days. Using it for longer can lead to what’s called rebound congestion—where your nose becomes even more blocked than before, almost as if it’s “addicted” to the spray. If that happens, you may find yourself needing to use it more and more just to get relief.

Precautions

Before using Afrin, let your doctor know if you have:

High blood pressure

Heart disease

Thyroid disorders

Diabetes

Glaucoma (a condition that causes increased pressure inside the eye)

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, you can use it as soon as you remember. However, do not exceed the recommended number of doses in 24 hours—stick to the 2-dose daily limit.

Overdose

Using too much Afrin—whether by spraying too often or using too many sprays at once—may cause severe nasal irritation, headache, high blood pressure, or a rapid heartbeat. If you suspect an overdose, especially in a child, seek immediate medical attention.

Storage

Store Afrin at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use, and always keep it out of reach of children.
