Acamprosate

Acamprosate is used to help individuals who have stopped drinking alcohol remain abstinent by reducing cravings and preventing relapse. Taken three times daily, it works by balancing brain neurotransmitters. While generally well tolerated, it can cause mild gastrointestinal issues, and in rare cases, mood changes. Campral should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan and with close medical supervision.

Common use

Acamprosate is a medication used to help people stay off alcohol once they’ve stopped drinking — it’s for alcohol dependence, which in Cyprus we might call to provlima me to poto (the problem with drink). It doesn’t treat withdrawal symptoms or stop you from getting drunk if you do drink — instead, it helps keep you steady by reducing cravings and giving your brain a chance to settle.

The active ingredient works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain — those are the chemical messengers that get knocked out of whack by long-term drinking. Think of it as helping your brain find its isihia (calm) again so you’re less likely to reach for another glass.

Dosage and direction

The usual dose is two 333 mg tablets, three times a day — yes, that’s six tablets a day, so you’ll need to get into a rhythm. Take them with food or after a meal to keep your stomach happy. Follow your doctor’s instructions to the letter — this is one of those medications where consistency matters.

Precautions

Let your doctor know if you have kidney problems. Acamprosate is cleared from your body through the kidneys — if your kidneys aren’t working at full strength, your doctor may need to adjust the dose.

Keep in mind, this medication is not a magic fix. It works best as part of a broader plan — whether that’s counselling, support groups, or whatever helps you stay on track. In Cyprus, many people find that having sigoros (support) from family and a good giatros makes all the difference.

Contraindications

Don’t take Acamprosate if you have severe kidney impairment, or if you’ve had an allergic reaction to it or any of its ingredients in the past.

Possible side effect

The most common side effects are diarrhoea, nausea, tummy pain, and headaches. Less common but more serious: mood changes — feeling down, anxious, or out of sorts. If you notice your mood taking a turn for the worse, let your doctor know straight away. It’s nothing to be ashamed of — better to speak up than struggle in silence.

Drug interaction

Acamprosate generally doesn’t clash with many other medications, which is a good thing. But you should still tell your doctor about everything you’re taking — including over-the-counter stuff and supplements, especially anything for mental health. It’s just good practice.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it’s nearly time for your next one, skip the missed dose — don’t double up. Your liver and kidneys don’t need the extra work.

Overdose

If you take too much, you might get severe diarrhoea, nausea, or stomach pain. If you think you’ve overdosed — whether by accident or on purpose — don’t hesitate. Seek medical help straight away.

Storage

Keep your tablets at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep the container tightly closed and somewhere out of reach of children and pets. If you have engonakia (grandkids) visiting, make sure they can’t get to it.
